User Evaluation of Adaptive Attention-attracting Behavior of robot

چکیده
In the future, it is expected that robots will act as our companions by taking some load off our minds and making our lives more efficient and easy. One of their functions would be to provide assistance to people such as giving reminders for medicines, appointments, weather forecast, etc. To initiate communication, these robots would first need to attract a person’s attention by performing some behavior. This study assumes that different people would prefer the robot to perform different behaviors to attract their attention. To adapt to a particular person’s preferences, the robot must learn from the reactions to its behaviors in different situations. The aim of this study is to test whether the learnt behaviors-situations combinations of the robot makes the task of attracting attention more time-efficient and further the person’s impression of the robot more positive after learning and adapting. The reported results suggest no significant effects in terms of reaction times to the learnt behaviors and no significant change in impression of the robot when it learns. However, the study does give some insights of used experimental methods and the workings of the used learning algorithm.

A New Single-Display Intelligent Adaptive Interface for Controlling a Group of UAVs
The increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones in different civil and military operations has attracted attention of many researchers and science communities. One of the most notable challenges in this field is supervising and controlling a group or a team of UAVs by a single user. Thereupon, we proposed a new intelligent adaptive interface (IAI) to overcome to this challenge. ...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Impedance Controller for Robot Manipulators
A desired dynamic behavior of constrained manipulators can be achieved by means of impedance control and various implementations of fixed controllers have been proposed. In this paper, and adaptive implementation is presented as an alternative to reduce the design sensitivity due to manipulator mismatch. The adaptive controller globally achieves the impedance objective for the nonlinear dynamic...
متن کاملEvaluation of Unimodal and Multimodal Communication Cues for Attracting Attention in Human-Robot Interaction
One of the most common tasks of a robot companion in the home is communication. In order to initiate an information exchangewith its human partner, the robot needs to attract the attention of the human. This paper presents results of two user studies (N = 12) to evaluate the effectiveness of unimodal and multimodal communication cues for attracting attention. Results showed that unimodal commun...
متن کاملA Novel Robust Adaptive Trajectory Tracking in Robot Manipulators
In this paper, a novel adaptive sliding mode control for rigid robot manipulators is proposed. In the proposed system, since there may exist explicit unknown parameters and perturbations, a Lyapunov based approach is presented to increase system robustness, even in presence of arbitrarily large (but not infinite) discontinuous perturbations. To control and track the robot, a continuous controll...
متن کاملDiscrete time robust control of robot manipulators in the task space using adaptive fuzzy estimator
This paper presents a discrete-time robust control for electrically driven robot manipulators in the task space. A novel discrete-time model-free control law is proposed by employing an adaptive fuzzy estimator for the compensation of the uncertainty including model uncertainty, external disturbances and discretization error. Parameters of the fuzzy estimator are adapted to minimize the estimat...
